Jeffrey Herrmann colorfully observed, in Your Flesh, that "Observations is a surprisingly linear recording considering it is a document of a recording session which was nearly 100% improvised" and that "many of these songs have a similar tempo and feel and perhaps the pages should have been turned more frequently … [that they] succeed in making a record that I feel compelled to listen to repeatedly is a fine rationale for improvised music." Will Smith (Omaha World Herald) said "they noodle along in what seems like endless improvisations without pulse," while Scott Yanow (L.A. Jazz Scene) thought it "continually interesting."
