Although Kevin Norton has appeared on a number of recordings including, among others, such diverse groups as Milt Hinton, Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith, Phillip Johnston, and the Soldier String Quartet, he really came into my consciousness when I heard him as a leader in two different groups: The Kevin Norton Ensemble and The Kevin Norton Trio. In his ensemble I was most attracted to his compositional strengths, while the trio impressed me with the power and development of the improvisations which continued to unfold through each performance. In planning this recording I suggested he try to bring in some of the composed elements to the trio without diminishing the improvisational strengths.
This trio has been together since 1992, when they were engaged to play improvised music at a wedding reception. George Cartwright is probably best known for his extensive work with his group Curlew. In his demeanor he appears to be, in many ways, the prototypical Southern Gentleman. In this case, quiet waters do indeed run deep and powerful. Mark Dresser, by the 1990s, had emerged as one of the more magnificent bassists on the international scene. This was his second trip to the Spirit Room (Gregg Bendian Project, CIMP 105) and each time he's impressed me with his originality and leadership and the very supportive role he brings to the group.
Originally I wanted to present the various integrated talents of Kevin Norton. What you have here is a look at Kevin Norton in various distinct areas which do, I think, integrate well for satisfying listening.
