Live at St. Nick'sSalim Washington (Primary), Donald Smith (Piano), Melani Dyer (Viola), Ku-Umba Frank Lacy (Trombone, and flugelhorn), Aaron James (Bass), Mark Johnson (Drums), Donna Cumberbatch (Vocals)Salim Washington's (1958, Memphis, TN) discography is equally slim in both leader and sideman categories, begins in 1988 on trumpeter Billy Skinner's Accurate release, and is followed up almost ten years later with Salim's first lead session, Love in Exile (Accurate). I first worked with Salim when CIMP recorded him (CIMP 336) as a member of Carl Grubbs' quintet in June of 2005. At that ...

The Early Show Live at Twins JazzDavid Bond (Primary), Andrew White (Alto&Soprano Saxophones), Bob Butta (Piano), Steve Novosel (Bass), Luther Gray (Drums)I first encountered David Bond (b. 1950, El Paso, TX) around 1980 when he put out his first record (Odyssey, Vineyard Records), a recording that suggested more promise than it received notice. By 1990, and the release of his next recording, that promise seemed to be taking shape.David's sax style is a combination of genteel melodic vibrato and quirky direction with touches of Bechet, ...

The Open DoorJoe McPhee (Primary), Dominic Duval (Bass)In 1998, Joe McPhee (b.1939, Miami, FL) and Dominic Duval (b.1944, NYC, NY) recorded The Dream Book (Cadence Jazz Records 1105), a tribute to Ornette Coleman which had its genesis 20 years prior to that release in Joe's recording of "Old Eyes" (Hat Hut). For these sets, Joe made the conscious decision to play only alto sax, an instrument that offers a new perspective for both the artist ...

SerenityOdean Pope (Primary)The genesis and background for this recording grew out of Odean's May 24, 2006 recording (CIMP 353). Odean is an early riser and, like a handful of other artists whom we have recorded, likes to go outside and play in the fields, so to speak. Listening to his a cappella improvisations amidst the birds ‘n' bugs that May morning, I found an emotional directness in Odean's playing that touched me ...Catalog Number: CIMPoL 5001
Air: Above&BeyondTrio X (Primary), Joe McPhee (Tenor Saxophone), Dominic Duval (Bass), Jay Rosen (Drums)The Suoni Per il Popolo Music Festival was established in 2000 and basically supports and exposes (in a word) independent music. Invited in 2006, this Trio X document comes from those sets and follows, by a day, the duet concerts with Dominic Duval (b.1944, NYC, NY) and Joe McPhee (b.1939, Miami, FL). The previous night's concert energized Joe into a fitful night's sleep and he, Dominic, and Jay ...Catalog Number: CIMP 365
Many In Body, One In MindBobby Zankel (Primary), Dylan Taylor (Bass), Edgar Bateman (Drums)Bobby Zankel doesn’t make many recordings and he doesn’t make any bad ones. Here he is joined by the legendary Edgar Bateman and longtime bassist, Dylan Taylor, on six extended outings. Assured and intense, this demands the attention of both the heart and the mind.Catalog Number: CIMP 364
Fire&WaterKhan Jamal (Primary), Dylan Taylor (Cello, Bass)Metal & wood is a lovely pairing and in music it’s a pure delight, especially with this pair of distinguished improvisers. Khan is a master of shimmering tones and this program explores those tones. Underpinning all that is KHan is the sumptuous cello/bass work of Dylan Taylor. This is all together an indulgence in beauty and invention.Catalog Number: CIMP 363
The Spirit of ThingsDavid Schnitter (Primary), Dominc Duval (Bass), Newman Taylor Baker (Drums)David Schnitter returns and, quite frankly, is back in top form. Reunited with bassist Dominic Duval (with whom he recorded in 1995), this is David’s first ever trio recording. In addition to bringing renewed life to his recording documentation, this session brings new life to some old standards.Catalog Number: CIMP 362
ExtremesKalaparush McIntyre (Primary), Will Connell (Alto Sax, Bass Clarinet), Michael Logan (Bass), Warren Smith (Drums)Introducing Kalaparush’s new group. Joining the front line, Will Connell’s hard edged alto is an excellent addition to Kalaparush’s quixotic tenor explorations. Add to that the support (now that’s an understatement!) of Messrs. Smith and Logan and you have the basis for some heavy extemporizing.Catalog Number: CIMP 361
Absolute, AbsolutelyStephen Gauci (Primary), Nate Wooley (Trumpet), Ken Filiano (Bass), Lou Grassi (Drums, Percussion)Here is part two of this remarkable Gauci quartet recording date. Nate Wooley joins Steve’s regular trio and sounds as though he’s been playing with this group for years. This is a classic quartet. Music written for the quartet is purposeful, pointed, and perfect Free Bop and beyond.Catalog Number: CIMP 360
CIMP 360: Circle ThisMichael Bisio (Primary), Avram Fefer (Tenor&Soprano Saxophones), Stephen Gauci (Tenor Saxophone), Jay Rosen (Drums)Here's a powerful listening experience that combines the distinct and intricate compositions of Mike Bisio with spot-on execution and brilliant solo statements from the individual band members. There's plenty of meat here for the mind and body from this large quartet. Arguably, Mike Bisio's most powerful work to date—and that's saying a lot.Catalog Number: CIMP 359
SubstratumStephen Gauci (Primary), Michael Bisio (Bass), Jay Rosen (Drums)This session updates the Gauci Trio (see CIMP 326). Whether inside or outside, Stephen Gauci plays with a heady and focused passion. There's nothing belabored in this offering. Credit also has to go to the rhythm of Mike Bisio (one of the most respected artists in this field) and Jay Rosen (an uncannily quick and sensitive drummer). Stephen Gauci presents mindful music—again!Catalog Number: CIMP 358
The Crookedest Straight Line Vol. 1Chris Kelsey (Primary), John Carlson (Trumpet, Flugelhorn), Francois Grillot (Bass), Jay Rosen (Drums)Chris Kelsey is a soprano saxophonist. It's what he plays—and with such originality and intense passion. For this recording he supplements his usual trio with the trumpet of John Carlson, whose very appropriate work brings an extra burn & polish to the usual trio setting and offers up his own inspired statements, all the while clearly enforcing the Kelsey compositional style.Catalog Number: CIMP 357
Ota Benga of the BatwaDavid Haney (Primary), Julian Priester (Trombone)David Haney and Julian Priester have been working together the whole of the 21st century and their music is definitely 21st Century. For this recording, they bring their particular shading of light and dark to a series (13 parts) of improvisations inspired by the sojourns of Ota Benga (b.1884-1916) of the Batwa tribe. Pensive and reflective, the nuanced tension of this music is often breathtaking and always starkly original. Extensive program notes outline the events for this set that David calls "nonreferential music." The intricacies and involvement of this creative improvised music is powerful and remarkable.Catalog Number: CIMP 356
Change-UpMat Marucci (Primary), Doug Webb (Stritch, Soprano&Tenor Saxophones), Ken Filiano (Bass)This is the second half (see CIMP 346) of a phenomenal recording session that produced 2 CDs, all issued in the same order as recorded. In and of itself that means nothing, but CIMP does not record and release music by the pound, so to speak. We release and endorse only quality. This is masterful Bop/ Free Bop music and reflects a very magical 24-hour period, all fully detailed in the Artists', Producer's, and Engineer's Notes.
